Giddy Up! 7 of Palm Beach’s Best Dressed Share Their Polo Picks

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 1.06.12 PMYou’re excited. You’ve picked the IPC match, purchased your tickets, and now you’re digging through your closet, trying to answer the same impossible question everyone asks at this particular moment: What, sweet Lord, am I wearing to polo?

With its so-stylish fan base, the Game of Kings has been virtually transformed into an extravagant, new pastime – part high-octane sport, part techno-hued catwalk – and like scoring the game-winning goal, the stakes in topping the Best Dressed lists couldn’t be tougher.

Luxe Vivant asked seven well-known Palm Beach polo enthusiasts to divulge their favorite game day must-haves, most-wanted matches, and the celebrity they’d love to dally (we mean, divot!) with at half-time.

Daphne Nikolopoulos, photography by Lauren Lieberman / LILA PHOTOTHE CHIEF: Daphne Nikolopoulos
Editor in Chief, Palm Beach Illustrated
Award-Winning Author, The Tenth Saint and The Riddle of Solomon
Co-Author, Palm Beach Entertaining: Creating Occasions to Remember

What you love most about polo:
It is an almost poetic combination of sheer power and elegance. The halftime festivities and the social scene are fun, but I am a bit of a polo geek – I am there to watch the game.

How many matches you’ve attended:
I stopped counting a while ago! I’ve been a polo fan for years. In addition to Wellington, I have attended matches in England, Santa Barbara and Wyoming.

Which celebrity you’d love to see divoting at half-time:
Prince Harry. And I’d really love to hear Bono from U2 sing the national anthem.

Favorite polo player:
Adolfo Cambiaso, but there are plenty of talented players who don’t get as much attention. For example: Polito Pieres, Santi Torres, Tincho Merlos, Facundo Obregon.

Match you’re most excited to attend:
Palm Beach Illustrated vs. Valiente; also the Gold Cup and U.S. Open finals.

Daphne’s Fashion Picks

My only rule for polo dressing: No black! Unless, of course, it’s part of your team gear such as this supercool jacket from team Palm Beach Illustrated (pictured below), in which case it’s perfectly all right!

Daph in Polo Shirt

Dress: For a polo brunch, I would go with something classic and romantic, such as this ensemble from Oscar de la Renta, (pictured below), accessorized with layers of necklaces.

Lace Dress

Shoes: I often go for flats because I am usually chasing after my four-year-olds who insist on coming with me to the matches! But I also love wedges – like this Gucci Carolina Heartbeat Satin Tie Wedge Sandal (pictured below) – which I am coveting right now.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 7.52.50 AM

Jewelry: I like to keep it more earthy than blingy. Anything with leather, like Michelle Farmer‘s leather and pearl jewelry (pictured below), gets a nod from me.

Leather and Pearls

Luxe Vivant Polo Tip: You already love Palm Beach Illustrated for its provocative fashions and high-caliber content but did you know the lifestyle magazine also boasts a brand new polo team, featuring some of the industry’s best players? Click HERE for an upcoming schedule.

Michele Jacobs Headshot THE EXECUTIVE: Michele Jacobs
Corporate Director of Marketing and Operations, The Forbes Company

The matches are always exciting and the people-watching is the best part of all, bar none. I’ve never seen so many beautiful people in one place except, perhaps, at New York Fashion Week!

Which celebrity you’d love to see divoting at halftime:
Bradley Cooper.

Favorite polo player:
Prince William. It is the sport of kings!

Match you’re most excited to attend:
The Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championship. The elegance of polo combined with high fashion on the field is the winning blend for a truly memorable game.

Aime Dunstan by LILA PHOTOTHE HOSTESS: Aime Dunstan
President + Creative Director, IT! EVENTS + MEDIA
Co-Author, Palm Beach Entertaining: Creating Occasions to Remember

What you love most about polo:
International Polo Club offers a “come-as-you-are” atmosphere for tastemakers, sports fans, children (and even dogs!), which taps into everything I love most. Whether I want to sip champagne in heels or hit the petting zoo with my son, attending a polo match makes for a perfect Sunday.

How many matches you’ve attended:

Which celebrity you’d love to see divoting at half-time:
I have a major style crush on Jennifer Lawrence right now but it’s always fun to see celebs with local sporting ties like Nacho Figueras, Tommy Lee Jones, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Mayor Mike Bloomberg. And if Christian Bale dropped by, I wouldn’t be too terribly upset.

Favorite polo player:
Nic Roldan was kind enough to invite my team to photograph one of his private parties for “Palm Beach Entertaining: Creating Occasions to Remember,” a book I co-authored with Annie Falk, Daphne Nikolopoulos and Victoria Amory in 2012 to benefit Children’s Home Society. So he gets my vote!

Match you’re most excited to attend:
I’ll be celebrating my birthday during the Ylvisaker Quarterfinals on Feb. 16 with some of my closest friends. Can’t wait to hit the Veuve Clicquot Airstream Lounge!

Aime’s Fashion Picks

Jack Lighton, Fashion on the Field WinnerTHE PHILANTHROPIST: Jack Lighton
President & CEO, Loggerhead Marinelife Center

What you love most about polo:
Polo is an amazingly athletic sport – for both the ponies and players. Watching the human-animal bond and interaction coming together to achieve greatness is humbling.

How many matches you’ve attended:
I have seen many show jumping competitions however, I have only seen one polo match!  I will be back to polo for sure.

Which celebrity you’d love to see divoting at half-time:
Anyone from the cast of Modern Family or Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, because I would like to ask him why my phone iPhone battery is always at 20%.

Favorite polo player:
I do not have one yet. However, last weekend I saw the most beautiful black pony at a match. He was fast so I nicknamed him “Bullet”. He is an amazing animal and my favorite “player” thus far.

Match you’re most excited to attend:
I would love to see some of the finals towards the end of the season. The competitiveness is legendary and I bet the spectators get really charged up.

Jack’s Fashion Picks

Pants: I am a guy who likes really bold pants.  Be careful though, if you choose a cheekier pant you need to tone them down with a more subtle jacket and shirt.

Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 2.53.00 PMLuxe Vivant Loves: Vineyard Vines “School of Fish” Breaker Pants;
available at Vineyard Vines.

Eyewear: Unless your idea of watching a match is hanging out at the Veuve Clicquot station which, by the way is completely acceptable, then invest in a good pair of sunglasses because it is sunny out on the fields. I suggest Ray-Ban, Serengeti, or Maui Jim as the optics are stellar.

CliffLuxe Vivant Loves: Maui Jim “Cliff House” sunglasses; available at Maui Jim.

Shoes: They are totally key. I always love Cole Haan however, I do know that the Nordstrom’s brand of men’s shoes are equally well-built and their loafers are super comfortable.

I love the whole mix of the king’s sport: fabulous fashion, bubbly and lovely weather. It is truly a one of a kind experience.

How many matches you’ve attended:
I lost count as we have lived in Wellington, polo’s home in South Florida, for years. It is a true treat to drive ten minutes to our tailgate spot and enjoy some of the best players in the world!

Which celebrity you’d love to see divoting at halftime:
If I had to choose outside the world of polo it would be Javier Bardem.

Favorite polo player:
Aldolfo Cambers.

Match you’re most excited to attend:
Any of the final U.S. Polo Cup finals matches played in April at IPC!
