There’s a sunny stretch in Juno Beach that thousands of sea turtles will brave the Atlantic’s turbulent waters to reach. The beach is a haven for these oddly adorable marine reptiles, who favor the tranquil spot for nesting and depositing their eggs.
Nestled next to the beach is the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, a 12,000-square-foot, green-certified facility that features a research lab, a resource center, a state-of-the-art sea turtle rehabilitation hospital, and more.
It’s also home to Fletch (pictured above), Loggerhead’s marine mascot who likes taking photographs with the Center’s visitors, especially parents and their children.
We caught up with Fletch to find out what he had planned for World Turtle Day, an annual celebration that recognizes the importance of turtles and tortoises around the world.
“I try to help the environment every day,” he says. “I always practice my four R’s and a C: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Respect, and Cleanup.”
They give us a portion of the drink proceeds, which we put towards our efforts to protect the turtles and help raise awareness.”
We ask if he’ll join us for a round, our treat.
“Unfortunately, I’m not partial to alcohol but I like the positive benefits the cocktail brings to sea turtles like me,” Fletch says, smiling.
No worries, we tell him. You talk, we’ll tipple.
